NORTHAMPTON - Two people were killed early yesterday in one of at least 18 fires set during what the state’s top firefighter called the state’s worst day of arson in memory.
Firefighters responded to the first reported fire around 2 a.m. For the next hour and a half, eight serious blazes - four at homes and four in cars - and at least 10 small fires were set within a few square miles. The most serious gutted a house at 17 Fair St., where two people escaped the flames but two others died.
My first thought was some drunk asshole!
The victims were not named pending autopsies, but they were identified as Paul Yeskie and his son, Paul Jr., by neighbors and a fire official with direct knowledge of the investigation, speaking anonymously because he was not authorized to discuss specifics.
The fires, set in houses, cars, and garages, were the latest in a string of suspicious fires that have plagued the Ward 3 neighborhood of Northampton for years, neighbors and officials said yesterday.
Yup, the police have time to BUST POT SMOKERS lighting up and harass college kids, but we have a TRULY DANGEROUS INDIVIDUAL or INDIVIDUALS running around lighting fires and NO ONE CAN FIND THEM!!!
As more and more emergency calls came in, all the fire equipment in Northampton was quickly put to use. A dozen other cities and towns helped extinguish the fires.

During a press conference in an empty garage bay at Northampton Fire Headquarters, investigators and government officials, including Governor Deval Patrick, who had come from his Richmond home, vowed to find out who set the blazes that resulted in the city’s first fire deaths in more than a decade....

A task force has been set up, including local police and fire departments, the State Police, the State Department of Fire Services, and the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives to investigate the fires.
Sigh. Better get something done quick then with all these agencies and manpower involved!
Stephen D. Coan, the top state fire official, said a reward of up to $5,000 was being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for the fires....

Police Chief Russell P. Sienkiewicz said during the press conference that he had stepped up patrols in the neighborhood following the meeting three weeks ago, and would do so again.

Neighbor Mike Shaughnessy, 60, said his family knew the victims. He described the elder Yeskie as in his 70s and his son as an adult. He said they were very friendly but quiet people. The son would often ride his bicycle past Shaughnessy’s house on his way to work.

Coan praised the fire departments for jumping into action. “Our mutual aid system is the lifeline of the fire service in Massachusetts, and last night, like it does many times daily, it provided that needed response to help a community in trouble - a community in need,’’ Coan said.

Arson is a particularly difficult crime to solve. “The evidence burns,’’ Patrick said yesterday. Officials are asking that residents come forward with any information they may have on the fires. “We call upon all members of this community to be deputized to bring forward information that will lead to the conviction of the person or persons responsible for this,’’ Coan said.

During the press conference, Coan offered tips to prevent arson, including locking the doors and windows on homes and cars, removing debris and discarded furniture from yards, forming neighborhood watch groups, maintaining smoke detectors, and installing outdoor lighting.

Several of the fires set yesterday went unnoticed at first - residents didn’t know their homes or cars were lightly burned until they woke up yesterday morning....

A criminal investigation is ongoing, but clues about how the fires started - and who may have done it - so far have been elusive. Now, officials in Worcester have also reported a string of suspected arsons, the most recent one Sunday night at a school. A spokeswoman for the state fire marshal’s office said there is no indication that the Worcester and Northampton fires are connected, but such assertions have done little to dampen fears that an arsonist could strike at will....
Northampton has been plagued by suspicious fires in the last four years, according to officials....

John Van de Graaff, a retired financial analyst who lives down the street from one of the burned homes, and his wife, Marylee Bomboy, a retired college administrator who moved from Manhattan to Northampton after Sept. 11, 2001, are trying, like many, to understand the sort of person who would set the fires.

HOUSTON - Twenty-two arsons have been reported since August in a historic Houston neighborhood called the Heights, known more for its comforting small-town feel in the midst of big-city sprawl than for being the center of criminal activity.

Most of the fires have taken place in the middle of the night.... Authorities charged a suspect last month for starting one of the blazes. But he has not been charged with any of the other arsons, and the fires continued even after his arrest.
