His main concern was the rejection of a bill in the Senate that would have provided more money for the long-term unemployed, aid for strapped state governments, and the renewal of popular tax breaks for businesses and individuals.
“If this obstruction continues, unemployed Americans will see their benefits stop,’’ Obama said. “Teachers and firefighters will lose their jobs. Families will pay more for their first home. All we ask for is a simple up-or-down vote. That’s what the American people deserve.’’
The broad economic bill failed Thursday when Democrats could not muster the 60 votes needed to end debate. The 56-40 vote fell four shy of the total required to break the GOP filibuster. Republicans support many of the policies in the legislation but are demanding changes to shrink its toll on the deficit....
The standoff again revealed the gaps between the Democratic president and the Republican congressional leaders on how to solve the nation’s problems....
But not when it comes to corporate funding, war needs, or Israel.
“We have an obligation to care for the next generation,’’ Obama said. “So I hope that when Congress returns next week, they do so with a greater spirit of compromise and cooperation. America will be watching.’’
In his address, Obama also bemoaned the stalling of a separate measure that would lift a $75 million liability cap on economic damages for companies such as BP during disasters like the Gulf oil spill. The Senate is considering a bill to increase that cap to $10 billion.
Can't apply it retroactively; that is unconstitutional unless you are a spying telecom.

They won't be paying much at all, not after it gets through the courts.
And Obama also said Republicans are the ones at fault for preventing votes on his nominees to key positions in the government. Former President George W. Bush often had the same complaint about Democratic lawmakers.
Republicans used their weekly address to claim that the president has been too slow to react to the threats posed by the Gulf oil spill and that some steps taken by his administration will do more harm than good.
“I’m glad President Obama is finally putting this catastrophe at the top of his agenda, but his response has been too slow,’’ Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi said. Wicker criticized Obama for pushing for an energy bill and increases in oil cleanup fees and for calling for a moratorium on deep-water drilling, which he said would cost jobs and raise the price of energy.

WASHINGTON — Muslims around the globe remain uneasy about the United States and are increasingly disenchanted with President Obama, according to a poll that suggests his drive to improve relations with the Muslim world has had little impact.
Translation: It has FAILED because the POLICY is NO DIFFERENT!

Even so, the US image is holding strong in many other countries and continues to be far better than it was during much of George W. Bush’s presidency, according to the survey.

There is one glaring exception: Mexico, where 62 percent expressed favorable views of the United States just days before an Arizona law cracking down on illegal immigrants was signed in April, but only 44 percent did so afterward.
I really don't care what Mexico thinks of our laws. I'm not on here griping about their laws; I just wish they would enforce them.
The findings by the Pew Global Attitudes Project, conducted in April and May in the United States and 21 other countries by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center, come amid a global economic downturn and US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. The poll has been polling people around the world since 2002.

Among the seven countries surveyed with substantial Muslim populations, the United States was seen favorably by 17 percent in Egypt, Turkey, and Pakistan and 21 percent in Jordan.
Those are HORRIBLE NUMBERS considering they are all (allegedly) FRIENDS!!!

The United States’ positive rating was 52 percent in Lebanon, 59 percent in Indonesia, and 81 percent in Nigeria, where Muslims comprise about half the population.
I'm having a hard time believing those.
The government doesn't even score that high here and we live under it!
Few of those figures were improvements from last year. Approval dipped slightly in Jordan and in Indonesia, where Obama spent several years growing up. Egypt saw a 10-point drop, even though Obama gave a widely promoted June 2009 speech in Cairo aimed at reaching out to the Muslim world.
Translation: The OBAMA SLIDE has BEGUN, and the ATTACK on IRAN for ISRAEL is NOT GOING to HELP!
In all seven of those countries, the percentage of Muslims expressing confidence in Obama has also dropped since last year. Only in Nigeria and Indonesia do majorities of Muslims voice confidence in him; just 8 percent in Pakistan do.
The INCREASED DRONE ATTACKS we RARELY READ ABOUT probably has something to do with it.
“You get a sense of Muslim disappointment with Barack Obama,’’ said Andy Kohut, the Pew president, who attributed it to discontent with US policy on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and to expectations raised by Obama’s Cairo speech.
Yeah, we all know why: it is the two-ton elephant in the room with the name off Israel.
The surveys were taken before Israel’s deadly May 31 clash with a flotilla trying to break the blockade of Hamas-controlled Gaza, which sparked widespread condemnation of Israel.
Translation: THOSE TERRIBLE NUMBERS have DROPPED to NEAR-ZERO now!!
As long as the U.S. CLEANS UP after Israel with a pooper-scooper they will NEVER RECEIVE RESPECT from the world -- or it's own people.
In the rest of the world, the United States and Obama generally fare better.
The 6 in 10 in Germany and Spain who view the United States favorably has doubled from the lows reached under Bush. The US image is also significantly better than it was under Bush in Russia, China, France, Argentina, South Korea, and Japan.

You know, the NUMBERS PROBABLY couldn't GET ANY WORSE!
They probably would have kissed the devil's feet after Bush -- and maybe they have the way this guy is going.
Obama is broadly supported, but the percentages expressing confidence in him have ebbed in 14 countries polled.

In only five countries do majorities think the United States considers other nations when setting its foreign policy.
Actually, it is ONLY ONE NATION we consider and we DO WHAT THEY SAY!
Support for US antiterrorism efforts and Obama’s handling of economic problems is generally strong, but there is significant opposition to American involvement in Afghanistan and little faith that a stable government will emerge in Iraq.
Oh, so the WORLD'S PEOPLE are just like us Americans, huh?
