Mugabe Opposition Eliminated

"Gibson Sibanda; lawmaker was Zimbabwe labor leader" by Associated Press | August 28, 2010

HARARE, Zimbabwe — Gibson Sibanda, a veteran labor activist and cofounder of the former opposition party, has died after a long battle with cancer, his party said Tuesday.

He was 66.

In 2005, Mr. Sibanda left the Movement for Democratic Change, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s party, over sharp policy differences. He had been deputy leader.

He then joined a breakaway faction and became a senator in the Harare Parliament and, after disputed elections in 2008, served as a minister of state for the splinter group.

Mr. Sibanda, a widower, leaves six children.
