SOFIA, Bulgaria — A massive explosion enveloped a bus carrying Israeli tourists in a fireball on Wednesday outside an airport in the Bulgarian city of Burgas, killing at least seven people and wounding dozens more in what Bulgaria, Israel, and the United States called a terrorist attack. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which wounded 30 others. But suspicion immediately fell upon Iran and its Lebanese proxy, the Hezbollah guerrilla group.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel convened security consultations. “All signs point to Iran,” Netanyahu said after Wednesday’s explosion.

There was no immediate comment from Iran. But Netanyahu and other Israeli officials pointed out that the bus explosion came on the 18th anniversary of a bombing of an Argentine Jewish center in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people and wounded hundreds, an attack that Argentine prosecutors have blamed on Iran.

Bellicose adversaries, Israel and Iran have a long history of accusing each other of terrorist attacks. Iran has blamed Israeli agents for a string of assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists over the past five years, for which Iran has vowed revenge. Israel has accused Iranian agents of attacks on a range of Israeli tourists and diplomats in at least a half-dozen places around the globe.
That part happens to be true, and in some Usraeli political circles it is a boast.
“Over the last few months we have seen Iran’s attempts to attack Israelis in Thailand, India, Georgia, Kenya, Cyprus, and other countries,” Netanyahu’s statement said. He called the pattern a “global Iranian terror onslaught, and Israel will react firmly to it.”

Just this week, a foreign national was arrested in Cyprus on suspicion of plotting a possible terrorist attack. Israel blamed Iran and Hezbollah for this as well.

In a statement, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak cited Iranian-backed militants and other radical Islamic groups as the likely perpetrators of the Bulgaria bombing.

“We are in a continual fight against them. We are determined to identify who sent them, who perpetrated [the attack], and to settle the account,” he said.

Israeli counterterrorism expert Boaz Ganor said Wednesday’s attack was “likely not the last in a series,” adding, “All this looks like Hezbollah, Iran, or a combination of the two.”
Despite repeated alerts and concerns of an Iranian-backed attack in recent months, Israel said it had no advance intelligence on a pending attack in Bulgaria.

The attack took place near the airport, shortly after a charter flight filled with Israeli youth landed at 4:45 p.m. local time.
Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said he was briefed by his Bulgarian counterpart and informed that a bomb was planted in the bus as it was transferring tourists from the airport.

Almost immediately after a suicide bomber killed five Israeli tourists in Bulgaria on Wednesday, Israeli officials, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, blamed Iran, an accusation uncritically repeated by most Western media outlets even as Bulgarian investigators warned it would be a “mistake” to assign blame before the attack could be investigated. Now, Israel, along with the U.S., is blaming Hezbollah and, therefore, Iran for the attack. Today’s New York Times article by Nicholas Kulish and Eric Schmitt – headlined “Hezbollah Is Blamed for Attack on Israeli Tourists in Bulgaria” – uncritically treats those accusations as confirmed fact despite no evidence being offered for it.

By “identified,” “confirmed” and “corroborated” Iranian and Hezbollah responsibility, what The New York Times means is this: American officials asserted that this was so, even as they “declined to provide additional details” and even though “the investigation was still under way.” Indeed, this accusation is, as the NYT sees it, ”confirmed” and “corroborated” even though “no details yet about the bomber like his name or nationality” are known; even though their anonymous American source “declined to describe what specific intelligence — intercepted communications, analysis of the bomber’s body parts or other details — []led analysts to conclude that the bomber belonged to Hezbollah”; even though “the Bulgarians are still trying to figure out how the bomber entered the country, how he traveled around and where he stayed”; and even though the Bulgarian Foreign Minister said: “We’re not pointing the finger in any direction until we know what happened and complete our investigation.” All The Paper of Record knows is that U.S. and Israeli officials have blamed Iran and Hezbollah, and — as usual — that’s good enough for them. Identified, Confirmed and Corroborated.
By stark contrast, The Washington Post‘s Karin Brulliard, reporting from Jerusalem, commits an act of actual journalism with her story on this event. She, too, notes the official accusations of Hezbollah and Iranian responsibility, but, as Think Progress’ Ali Gharib points out, she heavily qualifies that in the third paragraph of her story: “Israel offered no concrete evidence tying the bombing to Iran, and Bulgarian officials cautioned that it was too early to attribute responsibility.” That’s called basic journalism: instead of just repeating official claims, treating them as “confirmed,” and shaping the entire article around those assertions, she prominently notes that there is no real evidence to lead anyone to believe these accusations. She then adds more skepticism: “U.S. intelligence officials said it was ‘plausible’ that Hezbollah carried out the attack but that analysts at the CIA and other agencies were still evaluating the intelligence surrounding the bombing and had not reached a conclusion.”
I have no idea who is behind the attacks. If it turns out to be Hezbollah and/or Iran, that will not shock me: after all, if it is perceived that you have sent hit squads onto a country’s soil to murder their nuclear scientists, it’s likely that the targeted nation will want to respond with violence of their own. But there is no evidence to confirm the American and Israeli accusations. A reader of the New York Times article would not know that, while a reader of Brulliard’s article in the Post would. That’s the difference between journalism and propaganadistic stenography. It’s really not that difficult or complex, when repeating government claims, to note clearly and prominently that no evidence has been furnished to support those claims....

The attack Wednesday killed five Israelis, the Bulgarian bus driver, and the bomber, said Bulgarian Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov. He said investigators were using DNA to verify the identity of the bomber, who was carrying a fake Michigan driver’s license.

Bulgarian news media reported that the bomber was Mehdi Ghezali, a Swedish national and former Guantanamo Bay detainee. Ghezali was captured by US forces during a 2001 battle in Tora Bora, Afghanistan, and was released from Guantanamo in 2004.

Video surveillance footage released Thursday by Bulgaria showed a lanky, long-haired man who wore a baseball cap, plaid shorts, and a T-shirt and blended easily into the crowd at the airport in the Black Sea resort city of Burgas.
In Washington, officials said Ghezali was a former Guantanamo detainee but could not confirm that he carried out the bombing.

Iran denied any role in the attack, the Associated Press reported. Ramin Mehmanparast, a spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, said the charges are aimed at diverting world attention from Israel’s alleged role in the assassination of at least five Iranian nuclear scientists.
And laying the groundwork for the Olympic false flag.
The attack threatened to escalate tensions between Israel and Iran at a time when Israel is threatening military action to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and international efforts to stop its alleged program are faltering.
On Thursday, Israeli officials repeated that they would retaliate swiftly and firmly, but they played down the idea that they would carry out a military strike. Analysts said they expected Israel to respond covertly, continuing its tit-for-tat clandestine war with Iran.
‘‘No option has been ruled out,’’ Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon told Israel Radio. ‘‘But the last thing that we should do is shoot from the hip. It is better to keep our cool and use our judgment.’’
The blast occurred in the late afternoon outside the airport in Burgas shortly after a charter flight carrying 154 people, all but three of them Israeli citizens, arrived from Tel Aviv, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said.
Israeli and Bulgarian media reported that the travelers had boarded buses that were to take them to a hotel, and the Bulgarian interior minister told Bulgarian radio that explosives had been planted on the vehicle.
On Thursday, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak told Israel Radio that Hezbollah, a Lebanese Shi’ite militia, was behind the attack, and he pledged that Israel would ‘‘settle the account.’’
