"Pa. governor equates gay marriage, incest" October 05, 2013

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett compared the marriage of same-sex couples to the marriage of a brother and sister during an appearance on a Friday morning TV news show, a remark quickly condemned by advocates involved in the state’s battle over whether to allow gays to wed.

Corbett, a Republican, was on WHP-TV in Harrisburg when asked about a statement his lawyers made in a recent court filing, comparing the marriage of gay couples with the marriage of children because neither can legally wed in the state.

‘‘It was an inappropriate analogy, you know,’’ Corbett said. ‘‘I think a much better analogy would have been brother and sister, don’t you?’’

Pennsylvania is the only Northeast state that allows neither gay marriage nor civil unions. Its ban on same-sex marriage is being challenged.

Mark Aronchick, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, called Corbett’s remarks ‘‘insensitive, insulting, and plainly wrong.’’

Later Friday, Corbett issued a statement saying his ‘‘words were not intended to offend anyone’’ and apologizing if they did.

"Historic coaster stuck; 20 rescued" Associated Press, October 22, 2013

CONNEAUT LAKE, Pa. — A car on a historic roller coaster got stuck on the top of a hill at a northwestern Pennsylvania amusement park, and emergency crews led 20 riders down a narrow catwalk in wet weather.

A safety brake locked the car on the Blue Streak coaster in place at Conneaut Lake Park on Saturday night, officials said.

Nobody was hurt, and crews put a safety harness on each rider and led them down the 50-foot catwalk one at a time, Summit Township volunteer fire Chief Gig King said. That took about four hours.

The roller coaster will be inspected and repaired, and park officials hope to have it operating by Friday, the next time the park is open.

The roller coaster, one of two remaining Ed Vettel-designed coasters in the world, was built in 1938 and is the park’s main attraction. It was idled in 2006 due to maintenance and other concerns, but park officials used $50,000 from the Pepsi Refresh Project in 2010 to refurbish the ride.
