Sunday Globe Special: Immigration Issue Has Vanished From the Campaign

Just like the kids have.

TPTB must not have gotten the reaction they wanted when they rolled out the propaganda program:

"Immigration failing to gain midterm traction" by Reid Wilson | Washington Post   September 21, 2014

CENTENNIAL, Colo. — Representative Mike Coffman, Republican of Colorado, spends most of his days campaigning furiously across his suburban Denver district, which Democrats and Republicans view as one of the most competitive House races in the country.

But on Saturday nights, the retired Marine and former Colorado secretary of state first elected to Congress in 2008 takes a break from campaigning to learn Spanish. His goal is to be fluent, or nearly fluent, by the time he debates his Democratic opponent, former state House speaker Andrew Romanoff, on Univision on Oct. 30.

Coffman vs. Romanoff, huh?

Coffman is one of the handful of Republicans in the House of Representatives who supports comprehensive immigration reform, campaigning in one of the few areas this cycle where a conservative congressional candidate might expect to encounter grass-roots pro-reform pressure.

He has spent a considerable amount of time in Hispanic marketplaces and bodegas in his district, where the Latino community has grown dramatically as housing prices in nearby Denver increase.

Political observers in Washington constantly call immigration reform essential to the future of the Republican Party, especially in districts such as Coffman’s and in states such as Colorado, where Hispanics make up about 21 percent of the population.

But the reality on the ground has played out differently in this midterm cycle, even in a district where the issue might be expected to resonate: Both Coffman and Romanoff say their constituents, even in the Hispanic community, are much more likely to raise concerns about the economy or the cost of living than about immigration reform.

Instead, the hot-button issue Congress has debated for the last 18 months is increasingly becoming a hot potato. The crisis on the Southern border has heightened awareness of immigration issues and sparked heated passions on both sides — passions that present dangers to anyone who takes a concrete position.

‘‘I think it’s problematic for both sides,’’ Coffman said of the immigration debate, while he worked as a guest cashier at a local 7-Eleven.

‘‘I think on the left, there’s a problem with Harry Reid saying it’s all or nothing and that he’s not going to allow a step-by-step approach,’’ he said. “On the House side, I think there’s some colleagues of mine that don’t want to do anything outside of border security. To me, there’s got to be a path down the middle.’’

The House is where the American people are, and the polls have shown it. That is why the issue has been moved from discussion.

Neither candidate is likely to make immigration reform a centerpiece of his paid advertising strategy, for fear of stirring up his opponent’s base.

Already stirred up because of the expanded wars!

Yet calling a Democrat soft on border control remains a potent attack for Republicans, and highlighting Republican inaction and opposition to measures like the Dream Act gets the attention of Hispanic and Democratic voters, according to pollsters and strategists on both sides of the debate.

‘‘Republican opposition energizes the Democratic and Latino vote base. The belief that Democrats won’t secure the borders helps persuade white independents, especially men, to vote Republican,’’ said one Democratic Party operative, who asked for anonymity to assess the issue objectively. ‘‘For a while, people only believed [reform] helped Democrats, but that was never the case.’’

Are you tired of the illusion and imagery of the political $hit-$how fooleys?

I'm tired of being right most of the time.

Only a few campaigns anywhere in the country, most notably that of Scott Brown, the former senator in Massachusetts now running in New Hampshire, are using immigration as an avenue of attack.

And it is helping him surge to the lead.

The simple fact is the immigration issue has (literally) become unhealthy for Democrats after they thought plucking the heartstrings (waving them at us while Israel was killing Palestinian children) would give them a winning political issue. I've never seen a party fail so miserably at pushing an agenda.

"A rapidly spreading virus that can trigger asthma in young children has arrived in Massachusetts. A federal laboratory confirmed the finding of enterovirus D68 in a sample from an 8-year-old girl who lives in the southeastern part of the state, public health officials announced Tuesday.

That where Fort Edward is? You know, the place they told us the immigrant were not going but where they where sent anyway after the political fallout from the whole issue.

Doctors had suspected that the virus was circulating in Massachusetts because an unusually large number of children with respiratory illness have been filling hospital beds for the past couple of weeks. Enterovirus D68 is not new, but has been rare and typically causes gastrointestinal problems. This year, for unknown reasons, it is manifesting as a respiratory infection in children and has spread to 30 states, after showing up last month in Missouri and Illinois.

I think we all know the reason; the propaganda pre$$ here is simply obfuscating it.

The virus starts out an like an ordinary cold and usually goes away after minor symptoms, but in some children, it leads to severe asthma and wheezing.

I hate to say it, but I think I have it and am fighting it off. Thought it was "just a cold," but those are the symptoms.

There is no vaccine, and no treatment that specifically targets enterovirus D68.

I'm sure some contracts are being drawn up by the government to begin development, and I wonder to which pharmaceutical company will they be awarded?

Dr. Alfred DeMaria, the state epidemiologist, advised parents of children with asthma to make sure their youngsters are taking medications that keep the condition in check. He also urged those who come in contact with asthma-prone children to wash their hands often and clean frequently touched surfaces to avoid transmitting the bug."

That will help some companies bottom line.

"The culprit is a virus causing severe respiratory illness across the country, enterovirus 68. Health officials don’t know whether the virus caused any of the children’s arm and leg weaknesses or whether it’s just a germ they coincidentally picked up. The Colorado cases occurred within the last two months, and they come amid an unusual wave of severe respiratory illness from enterovirus 68."

Colorado is another place they bussed the kids.

And then I'm told they are making orphans of the kids?

"US deporting children of parents allowed to stay" by Maria Sacchetti | Globe Staff   September 23, 2014

LYNN — In the chaotic aftermath of last summer’s border crisis, when thousands of minors from crime-ridden Central American nations streamed into the United States, lawyers are discovering a bizarre irony in the immigration system: the Obama administration is deporting the children of adults it has allowed to remain in the United States.

***********

Carlos’s parents are here legally under a 1990 law that allows the Homeland Security secretary to grant foreigners temporary permission to live and work in the United States if their homelands are engulfed in a crisis such as war or natural disaster....

Critics of existing immigration policy fault the US government for extending the permission to immigrants long after their homelands’ initial crisis has passed....

At first, receiving the temporary permission is a relief for immigrants, especially those here illegally, and most are eager to pay the $465 fee to renew it. But advocates for immigrants say the temporary protection should become permanent, because prolonging it strains families who pay taxes and follow the rules....

What part of ILLEGAL do you not understand?!

Oh, right it's all in the choice of enforcement.

Are they?

"New illegal immigrants failing to report, US says" by Alicia A. Caldwell | Associated Press   September 26, 2014

WASHINGTON — Tens of thousands of young families caught crossing the border illegally earlier this year subsequently failed to meet with federal immigration agents, as they were instructed, the Homeland Security Department has acknowledged privately.

An official with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement revealed that about 70 percent of immigrant families the Obama administration had released into the United States never showed up weeks later for follow-up appointments.

What a surprise. Of course, "unreasonable racists" like me warned of that.

The ICE official made the disclosure in a confidential meeting at its Washington headquarters with immigration advocates participating in a federal working group on detention and enforcement policies. The Associated Press obtained an audio recording of the meeting Wednesday and separately interviewed participants.

On the recording, the government did not specify the total number of families released into the United States since October. Since only a few hundred families have already been returned to their home countries and limited US detention facilities can house only about 1,200 family members, the 70 percent figure suggests the government released about 41,000 members of immigrant families who subsequently failed to appear at federal immigration offices.

The official, who was not identified by name on the recording, also said final deportation had been ordered for at least 860 people traveling in families caught at the border since May but only 14 people had reported as ordered.

In a statement e-mailed Thursday afternoon, ICE spokeswoman Gillian Christensen said the no-show rate ‘‘represents an approximate snapshot of individuals encountered beginning in May’’ who did not report to ICE. Christiansen added that some of those people may still be reporting to immigration court hearings and a ‘‘significant’’ number of deportation cases are still pending before judges.

No big deal? (Blog editor shakes head)

The AP reported in June that the administration would not say publicly how many immigrant families from Central America caught crossing into the United States it had released in recent months or how many of those subsequently reported back to the government after 15 days as directed.

Or WHERE!

AP said that senior US officials directly familiar with the issue, including at the Homeland Security Department and White House, had dodged the answer on at least seven occasions during two weeks, alternately saying that they did not know the figure or did not have it immediately at hand.

From the transparent administration that collects all data?

The Homeland Security Department’s public affairs office during the same period did not answer roughly a dozen requests for the figures.

More than 66,000 immigrants traveling as families, mostly mothers and young children, have been apprehended at the border since last October.

They can't get out of Gaza, either.

Nearly 60,000 of those immigrants are from Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala and cannot be immediately repatriated, so the government has been releasing them into the United States, telling them to report within 15 days to the nearest Immigrations and Customs Enforcement offices.

Latin Americans, of all people, should know that comes with the U.S.-supported, right-wing junta.

At the meeting, the ICE official acknowledged the no-show figures while explaining the administration’s decision in June to open a temporary detention center for families in Artesia, N.M. A second immigration jail in Texas was later converted for families and can house about 530 people. A third such detention center will open in Texas later this year. Before the new facility in Artesia, the government had room for fewer than 100 people at its only family detention center in Pennsylvania.

Immigration advocates have complained that the new detention centers were punishing immigrants who ultimately may win lawful asylum claims to remain in the United States. In the meeting, they also questioned whether immigration officials had clearly and properly instructed immigrants to meet federal agents within 15 days.

The ICE official said it was necessary to detain families to ensure they did not vanish into the United States. He encouraged advocacy groups to help find ways to ensure that immigrants reported to federal agents as ordered so the government could begin processing their cases, including any requests to remain in the United States legally.

For a system that is already overburdened.
