Sunday Globe Special: Learning From Kellam

BALTIMORE — Right now, he does not have enough money for all of his textbooks, let alone a computer. He doesn’t have cellphone either, which means that during his long bus rides home at midnight, nobody can contact him to make sure he’s safe.

In September, he requested to be put on a deferred-payment plan while he figures out how to come up with the tuition money.

‘‘Truthfully, after this semester, I’m not even sure I’ll be attending this school,’’ he said....
