"Switzerland returns man who escaped Boston facility in 2008" by Laura Crimaldi, Globe Staff  February 13, 2015

A man who escaped from a Boston correctional facility in 2008 is being returned to Massachusetts from Switzerland, where he was arrested last year on a charge of possessing cocaine, according to the FBI.

Wander Junior Vargas Canela, 29, a Dominican Republic national, was expected to arrive at Logan International Airport on Friday night, said Kristen Setera, a spokeswoman for the agency’s Boston office.

Authorities have been searching for Canela since Sept. 16, 2008, when he escaped from the Boston Prerelease Center. He was serving 4 to 7 years for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, according to an FBI statement.

Online court records show Canela pleaded guilty to the drug charge on Oct. 10, 2007, in Essex Superior Court.

Canela, who went by the name Wallis Torres while in Massachusetts, must serve the four years and four months remaining on his prison term, the statement said. He also faces charges related to his escape.

He was arrested in Switzerland on narcotics charges in April 2013, and banned from the country, Setera said. Swiss officials arrested him again last April, and kept him in custody while he fought extradition to Massachusetts, she said.
