"Everett man gets 7 years for fatal South End stabbing" by Rebecca Fiore, Globe Correspondent  March 13, 2015

An Everett man was sentenced Friday to seven years in state prison for killing a man two years ago in Boston’s South End by stabbing him eight times, prosecutors said.

Christopher W. Powell, 41, pleaded guilty in Suffolk Superior Court to manslaughter in the death of Corey Thompson, 44, prosecutors said.

On Feb. 25, 2013, Powell stabbed Thompson with a 3-inch-blade pocket knife during an early-morning altercation under the Interstate 93 overpass near Traveler and Albany streets, Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said in a statement.

Witnesses said they heard the men arguing about money and saw Thompson chase Powell along Harrison Avenue. Surveillance camera footage showed Powell, Thompson, and another man arguing near Thompson’s car.

Powell stabbed Thompson several times before fleeing over a chain link fence. Thompson’s body was found by a passerby at 8:30 a.m. the same day, prosecutors said.

Thompson had eight knife wounds in his body, the statement said. Powell claimed the slaying was an act of self-defense, prosecutors said.
