Rowley police say they are looking for a person who may have shot at two people Sunday afternoon in a wooded area behind a shopping center, leaving one man suffering from a bullet wound to the leg.
Rowley police got a call at around 5:15 p.m. for shots fired near 225 Newburyport Turnpike, a shopping plaza that includes a Market Basket. As they searched the area, an 18-year-old man walked up to officers and told them he had been shot in the leg, police said.
Meanwhile, another man arrived at the Rowley police station and told investigators that someone had shot at him in the same area.
Police said they are looking to find and question a person of interest in the case. Authorities have not said whether they believe there is a connection between the two men who reported being fired upon.
However, Rowley Police Chief Scott A. Dumas said in a statement that police do not believe the attack was random. He said police believe the shooter knows the teen who was shot.
The victim was treated and released.
“Rowley is a safe and vibrant community, and we take any incidents of violence very seriously,” Chief Dumas said. “The investigation is ongoing, and we do not believe that there is a danger to the community.”
